College-bound High School Seniors Finish Strong

It’s an exciting time. You’ve either already received your early decision acceptance letter, or yoCollege-bound High School Senioru’re waiting to hear from colleges about your regular decision applications.

Being admitted to college validates that your hard work has paid off and launches you into the next phase of your life as long as you don’t stumble at the finish line.

An admittance letter is not an iron-clad contract. Read that letter carefully, and you’ll discover it’s loaded with caveats.

The FAFSA Crisis

Let’s address the current FAFSA crisis before anything else.

You probably heard from last year’s high school seniors about the many issues and delays with the FAFSA release.

Yes, it was a disaster!

It was an unnecessary and disruptive situation for the class of 2028.

Please don’t allow the horror stories from last year to stop you from submitting the FAFSA application.

Most of the issues have been resolved and the Department of Education is conducting several rounds of beta testing to clear up any lingering or new glitches.

The 2025-26 FAFSA is due to be open to all students by December 1, 2024.

The FAFSA remains your best opportunity to secure the money needed to attend college with little or no debt.

Don’t let the Department of Education’s missteps and delays stop you from pursuing your dreams.

Processing may take more time than anyone would like, but in the end, it will get done.

Learn from the Mistakes of Others

Stick figures- one being crossed out in red.Every year, for various reasons, admitted students find themselves on the receiving end of an admittance revocation. The more selective the school, the higher the chances for a thorough examination of end-of-the-year performance.

Here are a few ways to ensure you’re not one of them.

What to do:

  • Maintain your grades. Universities will check your final grades. If you drop from an A to a B+, it probably won’t cause concern. Going from an A to a C- might earn you a warning letter or an outright reversal of admission.
  • Continue your extracurricular and volunteer work.
  • Scrub your social media accounts.
    • Go back and check your previous posts. Is there anything that could be considered offensive or devise? If you’re uncertain, don’t risk it -delete it.
  • Read the advice from a college professor to incoming freshmen.

What not to do:

You’ve come so far and done so much. You’ve earned the right to let go a little. Don’t let it go too far.

Make sure your senior prank isn’t a prosecutable offense.

It’s not just the senior prank – avoid any trouble that could lead to criminal charges.

Before you head to your first class read this advice from a college professor.

It’s normal to be eager about starting a new chapter of your life, but don’t allow your excitement to cloud your judgment.

Use these last few months wisely – stay the course.

Go forth and do great things.
